The emergence of coinage in Greece, beginning in the 7th century BC, marks a major transformation in exchanges within the Greek world. Inspired by innovations from Asia Minor, particularly the kingdom of Lydia, coin minting quickly spread across Greek city-states, responding to the growing needs of trade and expanding economies. For the first time, the value of goods could be standardized, facilitating transactions, long-distance trade, and the development of markets.
Among the earliest emblematic coins, some feature the image of a lion’s head, a symbol of power and authority widely used in the first monetary issues.
