About the illustration:
Cleisthenes, a major figure of the late 6th century BC, embodies one of the decisive turning points in Greek political history. In Athens, amid tensions between aristocrats and the people, he undertook a profound reform of institutions in order to break the power of the great families and reorganize the city on new foundations. Through the creation of demes and the redistribution of citizens into new tribes, he laid the groundwork for a more balanced political system in which collective participation became central. His work thus marks the birth of an unprecedented model: Athenian democracy.
At the heart of the agora, the public space and place of speech, Cleisthenes addresses the assembled citizens. In this foundational scene, political speech becomes a shared, visible, and debated act.
