About the illustration:
This illustration takes us back to Predynastic Egypt, several millennia before our era, when the pharaohs and the great pyramids had yet to appear. Along the fertile banks of the Nile, small settled communities began to organize themselves into villages. Their inhabitants lived mainly from farming, livestock raising, fishing, and hunting, benefiting from the river’s regular floods, which enriched the surrounding land. Homes built from natural materials such as mud, wood, and reeds stood alongside granaries, boats, and areas devoted to craftwork.
Gradually, these villages grew, trade expanded, and communities became larger and increasingly organized. Craftsmanship developed, particularly through pottery, stone objects, ornaments, and early symbolic representations. It was within this world, still deeply connected to nature and the rhythms of the Nile, that the cultural, social, and religious foundations of ancient Egypt slowly emerged—eventually giving rise, toward the end of the 4th millennium BCE, to the Egypt of the first pharaohs and one of the most fascinating civilizations of the ancient world.
