Cette illustration représente Cléopâtre VII, dernière grande souveraine de l’Égypte ptolémaïque et l’une des femmes les plus célèbres de l’Antiquité. Née en 69 av. J.-C. au sein d’une dynastie d’origine gréco-macédonienne fondée par Ptolémée Ier, elle règne sur une Égypte devenue un enjeu majeur face à la puissance grandissante de Rome. Souveraine cultivée et habile diplomate, Cléopâtre cherche à préserver l’indépendance et la puissance de son royaume. Ses alliances successives avec Jules César puis Marc Antoine la placent au cœur des bouleversements politiques qui transforment alors le monde méditerranéen. Sa défaite face à Octave et sa mort en 30 av. J.-C. marquent la disparition de la dynastie ptolémaïque et l’intégration de l’Égypte dans le monde romain.
Cléopâtre est représentée dans un portrait majestueux, dominant la composition. Dernière souveraine de la dynastie ptolémaïque, elle est figurée comme une reine d’origine grecque, conformément à ses origines dynastiques, avec un type méditerranéen. Sa coiffe est une interprétation personnelle, inspirée d’un bas-relief de l’époque ptolémaïque visible à droite de la composition, et reprise volontairement sur plusieurs représentations. This illustration portrays Cleopatra VII, the last great ruler of Ptolemaic Egypt and one of the most famous women of the ancient world. Born in 69 BCE into the Greco-Macedonian dynasty founded by Ptolemy I, she ruled an Egypt increasingly threatened by the growing power of Rome. A highly educated ruler and skilled diplomat, Cleopatra sought to preserve the independence and influence of her kingdom. Her successive alliances with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony placed her at the very heart of the political upheavals transforming the Mediterranean world. Her defeat by Octavian and her death in 30 BCE marked the end of the Ptolemaic dynasty and the incorporation of Egypt into the Roman world.
Cleopatra is portrayed in a majestic portrait dominating the composition. As the last ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty, she is depicted as a queen of Greek dynastic origin, reflecting her ancestry, with a Mediterranean appearance. Her headdress is a personal artistic interpretation inspired by a Ptolemaic-period relief visible on the right side of the composition and deliberately echoed in several representations. Although historical sources do not allow us to confirm the image of extraordinary beauty that developed around her over the centuries, this portrait deliberately embraces the Cleopatra who has become firmly established in the collective imagination.
