Cette illustration représente l’arrivée d’Alexandre le Grand en Égypte en 332 av. J.-C., au cours de son immense campagne contre l’Empire perse. Après ses victoires en Asie Mineure et au Proche-Orient, le jeune roi de Macédoine poursuit son avancée vers l’Égypte, alors sous domination perse. Il y rencontre peu de résistance et prend rapidement le contrôle du pays. Accueilli comme un libérateur par une partie de la population et reconnu selon les traditions du pouvoir égyptien, Alexandre devient pharaon. Son passage en Égypte constitue un tournant majeur : il fonde Alexandrie sur la côte méditerranéenne et se rend notamment à l’oracle d’Amon dans l’oasis de Siwa. La conquête ouvre ainsi une nouvelle période de l’histoire égyptienne, profondément marquée par la rencontre entre les cultures grecque et égyptienne.
Après deux siècles de dominations étrangères, l’Égypte passe successivement sous contrôle perse avant de connaître un tournant décisif en 332 av. J.-C. avec l’arrivée d’Alexandre le Grand. About the illustration:
This illustration portrays the arrival of Alexander the Great in Egypt in 332 BCE, during his extraordinary campaign against the Persian Empire. Following his victories in Asia Minor and the Near East, the young king of Macedon continued his advance toward Egypt, which was then under Persian rule. He encountered little resistance and rapidly took control of the country. Welcomed as a liberator by part of the population and recognized according to Egyptian traditions of kingship, Alexander became pharaoh. His time in Egypt marked a major turning point: he founded Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast and famously travelled to the oracle of Amun at the Siwa Oasis. His conquest opened a new chapter in Egyptian history, profoundly shaped by the encounter between Greek and Egyptian cultures.
After two centuries of foreign domination, Egypt passed under Persian control before experiencing a decisive turning point in 332 BCE with the arrival of Alexander the Great. Beneath a golden sky, the Macedonian conqueror enters the country triumphantly, riding his famous horse Bucephalus and dressed in his armor.
