About the illustration:

At the heart of the composition stands the Arch of Constantine, erected in Rome by the Senate in 315, between the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill, to celebrate Constantine’s victory over Maxentius at the Milvian Bridge (312). The largest surviving Roman triumphal arch, it reuses reliefs from monuments of Trajan, Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius — three centuries of imperial glory in a single monument.

At the centre is the imperial eagle, the aquila. Bird of Jupiter, it became the emblem of every Roman legion; losing it in battle was the ultimate disgrace. Under the Empire, it embodied the power of Rome, divine protection and the majesty of the emperor.

At the top of the image is an original bust of Constantine (emperor from 306 to 337). The first Christian emperor, he granted freedom of worship with the Edict of Milan (313), reunited the Empire under his sole rule and founded a new capital, Constantinople, in 330 — paving the way for the Byzantine Empire.
