Constantin Ier (272–337 ap. J.-C.), dit Constantin le Grand, fut l’un des souverains les plus influents de l’histoire romaine. Il est le premier empereur à se convertir au christianisme, qu’il légalise par l’édit de Milan en 313, ouvrant la voie à son expansion dans tout l’Empire. Il fonde également Constantinople, nouvelle capitale impériale tournée vers l’Orient, qui deviendra le centre du monde byzantin. Son règne marque la fin de l’Empire païen et le début d’un monde chrétien impérial. Chef militaire habile, homme d’État visionnaire, Constantin réorganise l’administration, réforme la monnaie et consolide l’unité de l’Empire.
Dioclétien trône majestueusement au centre de l’image, incarnation de la puissance impériale, tandis que la tétrarchie se déploie en arrière-plan, reflétant l’équilibre des forces au sein de l’empire. En avant-plan, une représentation en trois dimensions de son palais de Split.

About the illustration:
Constantine I (272–337 CE), known as Constantine the Great, was one of the most influential rulers in Roman history. He was the first emperor to convert to Christianity, legalizing the religion with the Edict of Milan in 313 and setting the stage for its spread across the Empire. He also founded Constantinople, a new imperial capital facing East, which would become the heart of the Byzantine world. His reign marked the end of the pagan empire and the beginning of an imperial Christian age. A skilled military leader and visionary statesman, Constantine reformed the currency, strengthened imperial unity, and reshaped the empire.
