Le crépuscule de la liberté grecque, au IIe siècle avant J.-C., marque l’aboutissement d’un long affaiblissement politique des cités face à la montée en puissance de Rome. Après des siècles de rivalités internes et de guerres, le monde grec, divisé, ne parvient plus à résister à l’expansion romaine. La défaite des dernières coalitions grecques, notamment lors de la destruction de Corinthe en 146 avant J.-C., scelle définitivement l’intégration de la Grèce dans l’orbite de Rome. Ce moment symbolise la fin de l’indépendance des cités et le passage à une nouvelle ère dominée par une puissance extérieure.
Sur l’agora, cœur traditionnel de la vie politique grecque, un haut gradé romain proclame le rattachement de la cité à l’autorité de Rome. About the illustration:
The twilight of Greek freedom, in the 2nd century BC, marks the culmination of a long political decline of the city-states in the face of Rome’s rising power. After centuries of internal rivalries and wars, the divided Greek world was no longer able to resist Roman expansion. The defeat of the last Greek coalitions, notably with the destruction of Corinth in 146 BC, definitively sealed Greece’s integration into the Roman sphere. This moment symbolizes the end of the independence of the city-states and the transition to a new era dominated by an external power.
In the agora, the traditional heart of Greek political life, a Roman high-ranking officer proclaims the city’s annexation to Roman authority. Where the free speech of citizens once prevailed, the announcement of a foreign power now echoes. Around him, the crowd listens, caught between resignation and uncertainty. In this scene, the agora changes meaning: from a place of civic sovereignty, it becomes the stage of political submission.
