About the illustration:
This illustration portrays Ptolemy I Soter, a former general and companion of Alexander the Great who took control of Egypt following the conqueror’s death in 323 BCE. He founded the Ptolemaic dynasty, which would rule Egypt for nearly three centuries, until Cleopatra VII. As pharaoh, Ptolemy I consolidated his kingdom and helped transform Alexandria into one of the great political, commercial, and intellectual capitals of the Mediterranean world. His reign also saw the development of institutions that would contribute to the city’s extraordinary reputation, including the Mouseion and the famous Library of Alexandria.
Under Ptolemy I, Egypt fully entered the Hellenistic age, directly inheriting the legacy of Alexander the Great’s conquests. The ruler stands before the Lighthouse of Alexandria, an immense architectural achievement whose construction began during his reign and was completed under his son, Ptolemy II. Built on the island of Pharos at the entrance to Alexandria’s harbor, the monument became one of the most famous landmarks of Antiquity and was later celebrated as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Its monumental tower and distant light guided sailors toward one of the Mediterranean’s most important ports.
Draped in a purple cloak, Ptolemy observes the bustling harbor as merchant ships arrive from across the Mediterranean. Below, a stele bearing his cartouche and a coin from his reign evoke the political and economic foundations of the Ptolemaic dynasty. This period represents an extraordinary encounter between Greek and Egyptian traditions, transforming Alexandria into a major center of the Mediterranean world. Ptolemy’s appearance in this artwork is a free artistic interpretation, particularly the presence of a beard, which does not appear in his known historical portraits.
