About the illustration:
This illustration evokes the reign of Psamtik I, founder of Egypt’s 26th Dynasty, who ruled during the 7th century BCE. In a country that had long been divided and subjected to foreign influence, Psamtik I succeeded in restoring the unity of Egypt and strengthening pharaonic authority. His reign marked the beginning of the Saite Period, an era of political, economic, and cultural revival in which Egypt sought to reconnect with the grandeur of its past while becoming increasingly open to the Mediterranean world.
The Greeks played an important role in this revival. Psamtik I notably relied on Greek and Carian mercenaries to consolidate his power and defend the kingdom. Gradually, merchants, soldiers, and craftsmen from the Greek world settled in Egypt, encouraging new exchanges between the two civilizations. The ports of the Nile Delta became meeting places where goods, techniques, and artistic influences circulated.
The composition therefore illustrates a unique moment in Egyptian history: an ancient kingdom that, while affirming its identity and traditions, was gradually opening itself to the peoples of the Mediterranean.
