Pendant plus de trois millénaires, les anciens Égyptiens ont développé sur les rives du Nil une civilisation d’une extraordinaire richesse, laissant derrière eux pyramides, temples monumentaux, tombeaux, statues, hiéroglyphes et œuvres d’art qui continuent aujourd’hui encore à nourrir notre imaginaire.
L’Égypte fascine autant par la puissance de ses pharaons que par ses croyances et ses mystères. La relation entre les hommes et les dieux, la quête d’éternité, les rites funéraires, les momies, les monuments colossaux et la conception d’un monde étroitement lié au cycle du Nil composent un univers immédiatement reconnaissable. Ce dessin reprend l’illustration réalisée pour la couverture du livre Les Égyptiens d’Isaac Asimov. Au centre de la composition apparaît Psamtik Ier, pharaon de la XXVIe dynastie et figure importante de la renaissance saïte de l’Égypte au VIIe siècle av. J.-C. Son portrait est issu d’un travail personnel de reconstitution réalisé à partir d’un buste antique, afin de redonner présence et humanité à ce souverain venu d’un passé lointain.
À travers cette figure centrale et les références à l’univers pharaonique qui l’entourent, la composition cherche à condenser plusieurs milliers d’années d’histoire en une seule image. Egypt fascinates us through the power of its pharaohs as much as through its beliefs and mysteries. The relationship between humans and gods, the quest for eternity, funerary rituals, mummies, colossal monuments, and a vision of the world intimately connected to the cycles of the Nile created a unique and instantly recognizable civilization. Yet behind these spectacular images stood a complex society of builders, scribes, craftsmen, priests, soldiers, and farmers, capable of preserving its traditions while continually renewing its culture across countless generations.
This artwork is based on the illustration created for the cover of Isaac Asimov’s book The Egyptians. At the center of the composition stands Psamtik I, a pharaoh of the 26th Dynasty and an important figure in Egypt’s Saite revival during the 7th century BCE. His portrait is the result of a personal reconstruction based on an ancient bust, created in an attempt to restore a sense of presence and humanity to a ruler from the distant past.
